Jia Jaing spoke when I entered the GrowCo 2017 event on Tuesday in the Sheraton downtown New Orleans. People were laughing. First I didn´t really understand why Jia Jiang got such an attention. After him spoke the famous Steve Case, founder of the former AOL, Sheryll Sandberg, COO of Facebook and finally Kevin O´Leary “Shark tank matador – known for his toughness. (“Don´t you want to know the truth?”) – His own truth… Surprisingly nobody reached the same attention than the first speaker anymore: Jia Jiang. By telling his own story people got engaged. His theme is “rejection” Wonderful. Everybody has exprienced rejection in his life. But how many of us really have learnt to deal with it? After the speeches I went to his book signing and told him about the “motherland of rejection”: My place of origin: Germany. Actually there is a whole chapter in my book “Jeder Tag ist ein neuer Anfang” about the german NO. We do say very often No first in Germany – especially about new things we cannot forecast. Jia started to laugh and we took this picture to remember the moment…Right now I am reading his book “Rejection Proof” and I will give a speech about it within the next weeks.
It´s a late start for my blog this year. I wasn´t sure if I should write about this experience. I was invited for the funeral of Irwin Isaacson. He was the father of a good friend of mine Lee Isaacson. Lee helped Margarete and me a lot when we did our first moves in New Orleans and we will never forget our fun travels with him, Cythnia Knight and Genevieve and Martin Morell.
I met Irwin the last time on Lee´s 60. birthday. He became 91 and had a fulfilling life. It was my first time in a Jewish Temple for a funeral. It was surprising to me that we heard Beethoven and Vienna Walzer. Among the four speeches also the two sons Lee and Walter gave one. Good speeches. Both showed their gratitude for their father. Both started by telling a childhood experience story. The six year old Walter said to his dad when he heard a fire truck that he didn´t hope that it wouldn´t come to their house. His father answered him he shouldn´t say that because he was concerned about the people who had the fire problem. Walter characterized his dad as a man who was always thoughtful for other people. Little Lee as a little older kid was gifted a bike in pieces. Irwin wanted him to build his bike himself. That wasn´t a good idea. In fact, Lee didn´t like to build it himself and cried instead. Finally his dad build the bike for him. Lee ended his speech that his father was a “cool guy”. I am sure there was a lot more to say about their speeches. I just mentioned them because later in Lee´s house I heard Walter talking about Lee´s speech. I used the moment to tell Walter that I had read about him in the Toastmaster International Magazine. He was surprised, thanked me that I told him about this article and wanted to know who is Toastmasters International. I answered him that TMI is the biggest organization world wide about public speaking and that Toastmasters International New Orleans will become 75 years old this year. Walter answered: “Are you member of this club?” – I nodded. Walter finished on his way out: “We might meet there.”
I had already heard Walter speaking about the New Orleans history at the NOEW in 2013. He is well connected in town. He might even know former members of our club? Julie Schwartz for instance? Last week at Toastmasters I gave an impromptu speech. I always like the challenge if someone becomes sick or don´t show up to speak. My title: “The Foreword of our book?” I told my above story. We are thinking about writing about a book about our club by interviewing former and current members. TMI was so friendly to give us the database of a view hundred former members. At our next board meeting February 15, 2017 we plan our final decision to start this Kickstarter project…which would take place between 24 of Februar and March. I ended “What if we would ask Walter Isaacson to write the foreword of our book?” I think that would be great. We should set ourselves the goal to publish our book May 22, 2017 which is Walter´s 65 birthday to promote our clubs 75 years birthday event beginning of June 2017…
Toastmasters International Executive Commitee is coming to town! All Toastmasters are invited to join the conversation at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel, 621 St. Louis Street, New Orleans on Tuesday November 29, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The current President is from the Australia. Mike Storkey chair of the Board of Directors has introduced some issues of the organization, such as ongoing investments, the World Headquarters Relocation, and Executive Compensation on October 6, 2016 by way of email to all members.
Toastmasters International is famous for public speaking education. Since 2005 efforts have also been made in leadership education. “Since 2010, we have grown from 262,000 members and 12,500 clubs in 113 countries to 345,000 members and 15,900 clubs in 142 countries. As a result, we have extended our hours of Member Service availability at World Headquarters, increased the number of staff members dedicated to leader support, and invest more than $3 million annually to properly train and support club and district leaders around the world,” Mike wrote in his letter. $2 Million are invested in an educational initiative called Pathways, and Toastmasters International will invest another $ 2.5 million in the information technology infrastructure called the association management system (AMS). The World Headquarters will be relocated from California to Denver, Colorado in 2018.
I, myself, am a member of the local Toastmasters Internatonal 234 in New Orleans. Next year our club will be 75 years young, making us the oldest club in Louisiana. We would like to ask the visiting Executive committee for inspirations on how to celebrate our 75th anniversary when they are in town this week! Attendees should have pre-registered for this event prior to October 28th. If you did not register but would like to attend, please email Tina Guillott at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks.
Ruby Newell-Legner was in town last week at the New Orleans National Speaker Association! We really had fun speaking about the importance of “Creating Systems to Put You Center Stage” , step by step. This woman knows what she is talking about. Ruby presented with such ease. But there was nothing easy about it. Every little step was well thought out. Mimic, Gesture, Everything! And the beauty: She reflected her own acting. We learned how to interact with the audience as a speaker and get to know them in a very productive way.
And it was a premier to show off my new T-Shirt which I had received at Infusion- softs’s conference in Scottsdale, AZ, PartnerCON for being the “World Champion Bathrobe Winner 2016” in the category “Grandpa” in public. When I told her about, it she immediately wanted to take this pic with me…
What should you know about Ruby? Ruby was president of the NSA 2015-2016 and positioned herself as the “Fan Experience Expert” who helps turn customers into fans in the sports, leisure, and entertainment industries. She has trained the staff for the Super Bowl XLI, the 2006 & 2013 Grey Cup, the US Open, the 2010 Olympics, and the Republican National Convention. Her clients include 28 NBA, NFL, NHL, CFL an MLB teams and more than 1000 venues. A really HUGE niche with little to no competition!
My personal highlight at the PartnerCON 2016 last week? David T. Fagan: 2 hours on Wednesday morning Non-Stop high valuable content! He started his thoughts with the remark; if you think you learn something which changes your thinking just say “Breakthrough.” All of us received his book “Cracking the ICON CODE” and 5 of us a further book gift for the biggest breakthroughs…The title of the Session: From Invisible to Invincible: How to Be Seen, Be heard & Get Paid” Packed with practical advise. The Description says it all: “”Bottom line: You´re in the wisdom business. People are paying you for your advice. You are the product you are selling most and you have to answer the question prospects are really asking the most…”Why You?” That one question can show up in all these ways “Why you and not something else? Why you versus doing nothing at all or just do the same thing as always?” I´m going to show you how to crush that question and convert more leads into sales through influence, credibility and exposure.” Allison H. Larsen invited me to the speech and also introduced me to David afterwards. No wonder 95 % of his business are referrals… Margarete and I were fortunate enough to meet David´s business partner Melissa Gallemore. It´s the first time I told my “life story” in the USA since I moved to the USA in December 2013. Margarete did it, too. It felt a kind of funny but also relaxant, something looking back with a little smile and the girls promised us to visit us in New Orleans soon…we look forward to welcome you´ll in our lovely city!!! David will be my topic in my speech at our newly founded Advanced Toastmasters Club tomorrow.
